Cummins' ReCon program, for example, prevents the disposal of more than 580 tons of materials annually and achieves an estimated reduction of 90,000 tons of CO₂ per year.
The economic benefits are equally compelling. Remanufactured engines offer cost savings of up to 40% for customers while maintaining quality and reliability equivalent to new products. Companies are able to retain up to 85% of the original material in fuel system and turbocharger components. Recycling rates can reach as high as 99.5% of components through optimized remanufacturing lines.
H2: Automation in Remanufacturing Processes
The Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) and Rolls-Royce Solutions have successfully completed a joint automation project focused on cleaning connecting rods for reuse in fully overhauled engines. The robotic cleaning solution ensures that precision components meet strict quality standards reproducibly.
The automated process uses industrial robotics, force/torque sensors, and 3D touch probe scanners to achieve excellent cleaning results with high reproducibility and precisely controlled contact forces. This enables connecting rods to be reused numerous times, substantially prolonging component life cycles and reducing resource consumption. The project exemplifies needs-driven technology transfer in the context of industry's transformation toward a circular economy.
