The G4NH Engine: Hyundai and Kia’s 2.0L Nu Family Powerplant

The G4NH is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-four gasoline engine from Hyundai Motor Group's Nu engine family, introduced around 2017. It represents a shift toward improved fuel economy and lower emissions, utilizing the Atkinson cycle combined with Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPI). This engine has been widely deployed across numerous Hyundai and Kia compact and subcompact models, offering a balance of efficiency and reliability.

Technical Specifications and Design Features

The G4NH features an all-aluminum construction for reduced weight and improved heat dissipation. It has a displacement of 1,999 cc with a bore of 81.0 mm, and operates with a DOHC 16-valve configuration featuring Dual CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing).

Key technical specifications include:

  • Power output: Approximately 147–152 hp (110 kW) @ 6,300 rpm

  • Torque output: Up to 180–192 Nm

  • Compression Ratio: 12.5:1

  • Fuel System: Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPI)

  • Timing System: Chain-driven, offering enhanced durability over belt systems

  • Recommended Oil: 5W-30, approximately 4.0 liters capacity

The engine operates on the Atkinson cycle for improved thermal efficiency, which is a key differentiator from earlier Nu family engines. This design prioritizes fuel economy, though it may impact low-end torque compared to conventional Otto-cycle engines.

Common Issues and Recall Concerns

While generally reliable, the G4NH has experienced notable issues that owners should be aware of. The most significant is a manufacturing defect affecting piston oil rings in certain production batches.
