The crankshaft oil seal is a key component of the engine sealing system, divided into a front oil seal and a rear oil seal, which seal the front and rear ends of the crankshaft respectively. Once there is oil leakage, it can cause oil loss, engine noise, and even chain failures such as belt slippage and component wear. The solution to crankshaft oil seal leakage should follow the principle of "locating the leakage point first, and then treating it accordingly". The following are general solutions that are suitable for most fuel engine models.

1、 Accurately locate the oil leakage location and the cause of the malfunction

First, clean the oil pan of the engine and the oil stains around the crankshaft. After starting the engine and idling, observe and quickly distinguish between front and rear oil seal leaks: the oil leakage of the front oil seal is mostly near the crankshaft pulley, and the oil stains will adhere to the belt and water pump; The oil leakage from the rear oil seal is concentrated at the junction between the gearbox and the engine, and the oil stains will drip onto the rear end of the oil pan.

There are three main causes of oil leakage: first, the aging and hardening of the oil seal itself, lip wear or deformation, which are the most common reasons and will inevitably occur with the increase of vehicle service life; Secondly, wear and misalignment of the crankshaft journal result in excessive clearance between the oil seal and the journal; Thirdly, excessive engine vibration, deformation of the oil seal installation position, or loosening of the fixing bolts can damage the sealing effect of the oil seal.

2、 Basic emergency response and professional maintenance plan

1. Emergency response: Suitable for minor oil leakage scenarios

If the oil seal lip is slightly worn or leaking oil, and there is no damage to the shaft neck, an oil seal repair agent can be used for emergency treatment. Add the repair agent proportionally to the engine oil, and it will reach the oil seal area along with the oil, soak the aging oil seal lip to restore its elasticity, fill the small sealing gap, and be suitable for temporary sealing for short distance travel, which can alleviate oil leakage problems.

2. Professional Maintenance: Core Solution for Eradicating Oil Leakage

When the oil seal is severely aged, the lip is damaged, or the shaft neck is worn, it is necessary to disassemble and replace the oil seal, which is the most fundamental solution. The replacement of the front oil seal is relatively simple. Simply remove the crankshaft pulley and timing cover to replace it. It is important to install a new oil seal according to the original factory standards and apply specialized sealing grease; The difficulty of replacing the rear oil seal is high, and some models require lifting the gearbox. When replacing, it is necessary to check the flatness of the crankshaft rear flange surface and replace the oil seal seat gasket.

If wear grooves are found on the crankshaft journal during inspection, it is necessary to polish the journal or install an oil seal repair sleeve to ensure the sealing of the oil seal and the journal.

3、 Key points of installation and post protection

When replacing a new oil seal, it is necessary to choose the original or high-quality oil seal of the same specification to avoid the rapid aging of secondary products due to poor material; Before installation, apply engine oil to the lip of the oil seal to avoid dry wear and damage during assembly. Use a special tool to press fit and ensure that the oil seal is concentric with the crankshaft without deviation.

In later use, regularly replace the oil with the appropriate grade to avoid inferior oil accelerating the aging of the oil seal; Check the engine bracket rubber sleeve in a timely manner. If the rubber sleeve ages and causes excessive engine vibration, it should be replaced in a timely manner to reduce the vibration impact on the oil seal; If oil leakage is found, it should be dealt with in a timely manner to avoid oil contamination corroding the rubber parts around the oil seal.
