Summary of Common Malfunctions of G4NA Engine

The modern Kia G4NA is a 2.0L naturally aspirated model, equipped with Mingtu K5、 Models such as Zhipao and ix35 have a simple overall basic structure, but early versions had multiple design shortcomings. After driving 100000 kilometers, the faults were concentrated. Below is a summary of high-frequency faults, causes, and maintenance points.

1、 Cylinder pulling and excessive oil consumption

This is the most typical common problem of G4NA. Models manufactured before 2017 were not equipped with piston cooling fuel injectors and relied solely on crankshaft splashing to lubricate the piston. Under high load conditions, the piston heat dissipation was insufficient, which easily caused damage to the cylinder wall. The fault manifests as a metallic knocking sound similar to that of a diesel engine when the car is cold, a slight reduction in the abnormal noise when the car is hot, accompanied by rapid oil loss and blue smoke emission from the exhaust. At the same time, the ternary catalytic carrier is prone to breakage, and ceramic debris is sucked into the cylinder, accelerating cylinder wall wear. The maintenance requires boring the cylinder liner and installing cooling fuel injectors, and synchronously replacing the new piston rings.

2、 Cold car abnormal noise and gear jumping of timing chain

The durability of the original hydraulic tensioner is poor. After driving 150000 kilometers, the chain elongates and the tension is insufficient. When starting cold, there is a rattling noise coming from the engine compartment. If ignored for a long time, chain jumping teeth will cause the intake valve to bend, leading to engine overhaul. Daily maintenance requires shortening the oil change cycle. If there is any abnormal noise, replace the entire chain and tensioner components directly to avoid major mechanical damage.

3、 Carbon buildup in the intake duct and idle shaking

This model is equipped with multi-point electronic fuel injection, but it is prone to accumulate gum and carbon deposits during low-speed and short distance driving, which can attach to the throttle and intake valve back, resulting in a reduced intake cross-section. The fault features include idle shaking, weak starting, increased fuel consumption, and low-speed jerking. The handling method is to disassemble and clean the throttle valve and intake duct. Severe carbon buildup can be physically cleaned with walnut sand, and cleaning every 20000 kilometers can prevent it in advance.

4、 Bearing wear and engine abnormal noise

Failure to add engine oil in a timely manner and prolonged high temperatures can cause wear on the crankshaft, connecting rod bearings, and dull metal knocking sounds during medium to low speed operation. The wear resistance of the original bearing shells is average. Once there are signs of wear, the entire set of bearing shells must be replaced to prevent the crankshaft from being pulled and scrapped. Daily use of original factory grade fully synthetic engine oil to eliminate inferior oil products.

5、 Cooling system leakage and high temperature malfunction

Aging of water pump seals and slight leakage of cylinder gaskets are common problems, manifested as frequent loss of coolant, high water temperature, and oil emulsification. Regular inspection of water pipes and pump seals is required, and timely maintenance should be carried out after high temperatures to prevent further deformation and pulling of the cylinder body caused by high temperatures.

Most failures of G4NA are caused by early lubrication design defects and maintenance omissions. Standardized maintenance, timely handling of abnormal noises and oil loss can significantly extend the service life of the engine.
