1. Introduction and Overview
The CCZ is a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine belonging to Volkswagen Group's renowned EA888 family (Gen 2) . Produced between approximately 2008 and 2015, it was widely used across the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, and Škoda brands . Known for its strong performance and tuning potential, the CCZ engine represents a significant step in turbocharged direct injection technology, replacing earlier FSI units with improved efficiency and power delivery .

2. Technical Specifications
The engine features a four-cylinder inline configuration with a cast iron block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head . It utilizes direct fuel injection (FSI/TFSI) and a BorgWarner K03 turbocharger

3. Performance and Design Features
The CCZ engine delivers a flat torque curve, with peak torque available from as low as 1,700 rpm . Power outputs vary by application, with the CCZA variant typically producing 211 hp in the Golf Mk6 GTI and Škoda Octavia vRS . Key technologies include variable intake valve timing, a variable intake manifold, and a two-stage crankcase ventilation system . Unlike the previous EA113 generation, the EA888 CCZ uses a timing chain instead of a belt . Fuel consumption for vehicles using this engine averages approximately 7.3–9.5 L/100 km in combined driving .

4. Common Issues and Reliability
While the CCZ engine offers strong performance, several known issues require attention. The most significant is excessive oil consumption, often due to faulty piston rings or piston design in early versions . The timing chain tensioner is prone to wear and can fail before 100,000 km, potentially causing catastrophic engine damage . Other common problems include carbon buildup on intake valves due to direct injection (requiring periodic media blasting), failing water pumps (plastic impeller), and high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) cam follower wear . With proper maintenance, the engine can achieve approximately 260,000 km of service life .

5. Maintenance Summary
Regular maintenance is critical for CCZ engine longevity. Use VW-specified 5W-30 synthetic oil and change at recommended intervals . Monitor oil consumption closely and address any increase promptly. The timing chain tensioner should be inspected regularly, with replacement recommended preventatively. Carbon cleaning of intake valves is advisable every 60,000–80,000 km. This engine is widely used in models including the Volkswagen Golf Mk6 GTI, Passat B6, Tiguan, Scirocco, Audi A3, A4, Q3, and Škoda Octavia vRS .
