The Chevrolet F14D4 is a 1.4-liter inline-four gasoline engine that has served as a reliable workhorse for General Motors' compact vehicle lineup since its introduction in 2008. Developed as a modernized successor to the F14D3, this powerplant addressed many of its predecessor's shortcomings while incorporating several technological advancements. The F14D4 is notable for its combination of respectable power output, commendable fuel economy, and relatively simple construction, making it a popular choice for urban commuting and daily driving.

The engine features a cast-iron cylinder block paired with a DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) cylinder head with four valves per cylinder. Its core specifications include a displacement of 1,399 cc, a cylinder bore of 77.9 mm, a piston stroke of 73.4 mm, and a compression ratio of 10.5:1. The F14D4 produces 101 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 131 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It employs a multi-point fuel injection system, individual ignition coils, and an electronic throttle valve. Notably, the engine features variable valve timing on both camshafts and meets Euro 4 emissions standards. Fuel consumption figures for a Chevrolet Aveo T250 equipped with this engine are 7.9 L/100 km in city driving, 4.7 L/100 km on the highway, and 5.9 L/100 km combined. The recommended engine oil is 5W-30 or 10W-30 synthetic, with a capacity of approximately 4.5 liters. With proper maintenance, the engine's lifespan is estimated at around 350,000 km.

The F14D4 was installed across several Chevrolet models, demonstrating its versatility. These include the Chevrolet Aveo (T250 from 2008–2011 and T300 from 2011–2020), the Chevrolet Lanos T150 (2009–2013), as well as the Chevrolet Sonic, Trax, and Spark.

While the F14D4 is generally reliable, it is not without its known issues. Early production units suffered from phase regulators that failed within 30,000 km, though later revisions improved their lifespan. The electronic throttle assembly can be sensitive to dirt and electrical issues. The timing belt is officially rated for 160,000 km, but actual service life varies, and a broken belt often results in bent valves. Additionally, the engine lacks hydraulic lifters, requiring valve clearance adjustment via calibrated cups at approximately 100,000 km. Common issues also include thermostat problems, a problematic expansion tank cap, and ignition coil module failures.

In conclusion, the Chevrolet F14D4 represents a practical and efficient powertrain solution for the compact car segment. Its balance of performance and economy, combined with its widespread application across multiple models, underscores its significance in GM's engine portfolio.
