The Mercedes M264 engine occasionally experiences overheating faults during use, many of which are closely related to the cylinder head. The two interact with each other. Abnormal cylinder head can cause high engine temperature, and long-term overheating can damage the cylinder head in reverse, forming a vicious cycle. Clarifying the correlation between them is the key to troubleshooting and solving faults.

1、 Cylinder head structural defects cause engine overheating

The integrated water, oil, and air channels inside the cylinder head are important components of the cooling system. The layout of the M264 cylinder head water channel is compact. If impurities and scale accumulate in the coolant for a long time, it is easy to cause local blockage of the water channel, which hinders the circulation of coolant and prevents the normal dissipation of heat, directly leading to a surge in engine water temperature. In addition, leakage of the cylinder head sealing surface, water blockage, corrosion, and leakage can cause continuous loss of coolant and a sudden drop in heat dissipation capacity, which is also a common cause of engine overheating.

2、 Cylinder head malfunction causes gas leakage and temperature rise

Damaged cylinder gaskets and deformed cylinder head surfaces can cause cylinder blowby. The infiltration of high-temperature and high-pressure gas into the cooling water channel will quickly heat up the coolant, causing the water temperature to rise sharply in a short period of time. Simultaneously leaking air can lead to deterioration of combustion conditions, decreased engine power, increased load, further exacerbating overall heat generation, and accompanied by phenomena such as water tank bubbling and idle shaking.

3、 Damage to cylinder head caused by engine overheating

When the engine continues to heat up, the cylinder head is the first to be damaged. The M264 adopts an aluminum alloy cylinder head, which has limited resistance to high temperature deformation. Prolonged overheating can cause plane warping deformation and damage the original sealing accuracy. In severe cases, valve seat ring loosening and cylinder head water channel cracking may occur, which not only exacerbates water leakage and gas leakage problems, but also causes secondary faults such as poor valve sealing and insufficient cylinder pressure.

4、 Suggestions for fault handling and prevention

When troubleshooting overheating faults, priority should be given to checking the smoothness of the cylinder head water channel and the condition of the cylinder gasket, cleaning the scale, and replacing damaged parts. When repairing and disassembling the cylinder head, strictly tighten the bolts according to the standard torque and sequence to avoid secondary deformation. Regularly replace compliant antifreeze on a daily basis to prevent scaling in the waterway. If abnormal water temperature is found during driving, immediately stop the vehicle for maintenance to avoid continuous damage to the cylinder head caused by high temperatures and ensure stable engine operation.
