It may not be as well-known as the cylinder block or crankshaft, but its normal operation directly determines whether the engine can run smoothly, efficiently, and durably. The core role of the timing system is to synchronize the operation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring that the intake and exhaust valves open and close at the precise moment during the engine’s four-stroke cycle (intake, compression, power, exhaust). Without this precise synchronization, the engine’s fuel combustion process will be disrupted, leading to poor performance, increased fuel consumption, or even severe mechanical damage.
In detail, the crankshaft drives the piston up and down to complete the power generation process, while the camshaft controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves to allow air-fuel mixture to enter and exhaust gas to exit.
