The Mercedes M264 series engine is widely used, and insufficient cylinder pressure can directly cause problems such as weakened power, idle shaking, difficulty starting, and increased fuel consumption. Based on the structural characteristics of this model, it is possible to gradually investigate from shallow to deep and quickly locate the root cause of the fault.

1、 Troubleshooting of Valve Mechanism

Abnormal valve timing is a common cause of low cylinder pressure in M264. Firstly, check for valve carbon buildup. The intake valve of this engine is prone to gum carbon buildup, which can cause the valve to close poorly and cause seal leakage. Next, check the valve clearance. If the clearance is too large or the elasticity of the valve spring is weakened, it will cause the valve to not return in time. In addition, timing system deviations can also disrupt the valve timing, disrupt the timing of intake and exhaust, and lead to a decrease in overall cylinder pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to calibrate the position of the timing chain and sprocket.

2、 Troubleshooting of piston and piston ring issues

Disassemble and inspect the condition of the piston ring. Long term use may cause wear, jamming, and breakage of the ring body, failure of the oil and gas seal, and leakage of compressed gas from the cylinder along the gap. At the same time, check whether there are any strains or wear on the top and skirt of the piston, and whether the clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall exceeds the standard, which can also cause pressure relief. If there is a phenomenon of oil burning, it can be basically judged as poor sealing of the piston ring or cylinder wall, which is also an important cause of insufficient cylinder pressure.

3、 Inspection of cylinder gasket and cylinder body seal

Damaged cylinder gaskets and blowby can directly cause cylinder pressure to interlock with each other. Observing the engine operating conditions, if accompanied by bubbling in the water tank and oil emulsification, it indicates that the cylinder gasket is damaged. Check the flatness of the cylinder head. The M264 engine is prone to slight deformation of the cylinder head after high temperatures, and poor sealing of the joint surface can cause air leakage. In addition, slight cracks in the cylinder body and head, as well as compressed gas leakage, can also cause abnormal cylinder pressure in single or multiple cylinders.

4、 Inspection of auxiliary components of the intake system

Check if there is any air leakage in the intake manifold and pipeline gaskets. External air leakage can reduce the intake volume and indirectly affect the cylinder pressure value. Carbon buildup and blockage in the throttle valve, as well as abnormal operation of the intake flap, can also cause poor intake. After completing all troubleshooting, repair or replace the faulty components, retest the cylinder pressure after repair to ensure that the values return to the original factory standards and the engine operates normally.
