1. Unveiling the Principle

To gain a deeper understanding of the differences between these two engines, we must first start with their working principles. A naturally aspirated engine, like a steady gentleman, operates without the aid of any external pressure boosting device, relying solely on the vacuum negative pressure generated by the downward movement of the piston, allowing atmospheric pressure to directly press air into the engine combustion chamber. This is like drinking a beverage with a straw, using atmospheric pressure to suck the beverage into our mouth. During the operation of a naturally aspirated engine, fresh air passes through the air filter, intake pipe, throttle body, intake manifold, and other components in sequence, enters the engine interior, and mixes with the fuel injected from the fuel injector to complete the combustion process.

A turbocharged engine, on the other hand, is like a passionate athlete, using the exhaust gas generated by the internal combustion engine to drive an air compressor for intake. The exhaust gas emitted by the engine has a certain amount of energy, which drives the turbine in the turbine chamber to rotate. As the turbine is coaxial with the impeller, the impeller compresses the air and sends it into the cylinder. When the engine speed increases, the exhaust gas discharge speed and turbine speed also increase. The impeller compresses more air into the cylinder, making combustion more complete. By increasing the fuel quantity and adjusting the engine speed, the engine output power can be increased.

2. High performance PK

In terms of performance, turbocharged engines and naturally aspirated engines each have their own advantages. Turbocharged engines can significantly increase power output through exhaust gas turbocharging technology. Taking the common 1.5T turbocharged engine as an example, its power level is often comparable to or even surpasses that of a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine. In scenarios such as high-speed overtaking and fast starting, the advantages of turbocharged engines are fully demonstrated. The powerful torque that erupts instantly allows the vehicle to quickly complete acceleration actions, satisfying the driver's pursuit of speed and passion. But it is not perfect either, and turbo lag is one of its major shortcomings. At low engine speeds, the turbo has not fully started, resulting in a certain delay in power output, just like an athlete starting half a beat slower.

Naturally aspirated engines are known for their linear and smooth power output. From low speed to high speed, the power increases gradually, and the driver can accurately control the speed changes, enjoying a silky smooth driving experience, especially suitable for driving in congested urban road conditions. Frequent start stop will not make the driver and passengers feel obvious jolts. However, in terms of power intensity, naturally aspirated engines are relatively weaker, and at the same displacement, their power output is usually not as good as turbocharged engines.

In terms of fuel economy, there are also differences between the two. Frequent stop and go on urban roads, with a simple intake system for naturally aspirated engines that do not require additional energy to drive the turbocharging device, resulting in relatively stable fuel consumption and an advantage. But when driving at high speeds, the advantages of turbocharged engines are highlighted. The turbo continues to work steadily, allowing the engine to maintain strong power at lower speeds and reduce fuel consumption.

3. Cost and maintenance

In terms of purchasing costs, turbocharged engines require higher precision in their components due to their more complex technology, resulting in increased research and manufacturing costs. Among the same model, turbocharged versions are often priced thousands or even more yuan higher than naturally aspirated versions. Taking a certain brand of compact sedan as an example, the 1.5T turbocharged model usually has a guide price 5000-8000 yuan higher than the 1.5L naturally aspirated model.

In terms of maintenance, naturally aspirated engines have a simple structure, few maintenance items, and low requirements for consumables such as engine oil. Ordinary mineral or semi synthetic engine oil can be used, and the single maintenance cost is low. Minor maintenance such as changing oil and filters usually costs 200-300 yuan. Turbocharged engines require the use of fully synthetic engine oil, which is expensive due to the high temperature and high speed environment in which the turbine operates; And the turbocharger needs regular inspection and maintenance, and the replacement cycle of spark plugs in some models is also shorter, greatly increasing maintenance costs. The cost of minor maintenance is usually between 500-800 yuan, while major maintenance involves replacing air filters, gasoline filters, etc., and the cost can reach 1500-3000 yuan.

4. How to make a decision

Turbocharged engines and naturally aspirated engines have their own strengths and weaknesses, how should we choose? If you are someone who pursues speed and passion, is passionate about driving with a strong sense of acceleration, frequently drives on highways, or has intense driving needs, a turbocharged engine is undoubtedly your best partner. Its powerful power reserve allows you to effortlessly overtake and accelerate.

If you pay more attention to the stability, economy, and smoothness of driving, and mainly shuttle on city roads in daily life, a naturally aspirated engine is a good choice. It is stable and reliable, easy to maintain and cost-effective, and can provide you with a comfortable and smooth driving experience in congested road conditions with frequent starts and stops. In short, there is no absolute perfect engine type, only the one that best meets one's own needs. Before purchasing a car, it is important to learn more and test drive more in order to choose the "heart of the car" that you desire.
