1.When choosing a car, the choice of engine type directly affects long-term operating costs. The "affordability" of diesel and gasoline engines needs to be comprehensively considered from multiple dimensions such as purchase, fuel consumption, and maintenance.

2.From the perspective of purchasing costs, the initial investment in diesel engines is higher. Due to the more complex structure of diesel engines, they need to withstand higher compression ratios, and the material and processing requirements for core components such as cylinder blocks and pistons are more stringent, resulting in significantly higher manufacturing costs than gasoline engines. The diesel version of the same car model is usually priced 10% -20% higher than the gasoline version. For example, the diesel version of a compact SUV may be 10000 to 30000 yuan more expensive than the gasoline version, which puts the diesel engine at a cost disadvantage during the purchase stage.

3.But in terms of fuel cost, diesel engines are more economical. Diesel has a higher energy density and combustion efficiency than gasoline, and a diesel car with the same displacement consumes 20% -30% less fuel per 100 kilometers than a gasoline car. Based on an annual mileage of 20000 kilometers, diesel vehicles can save approximately 1000-3000 yuan in fuel costs per year. In addition, diesel prices are usually 5% -10% lower than gasoline, further amplifying the fuel cost advantage. Long term use can effectively offset the price difference of initial car purchases.

In terms of maintenance costs, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Diesel engines have a relatively simple structure, no complex ignition system, low failure rate, fewer daily maintenance items, longer maintenance cycles (usually once every 10000 kilometers), and a single maintenance cost similar to gasoline engines. However, the maintenance cost of diesel engines is higher. Once a mechanical failure occurs, the labor cost for parts replacement and repair is significantly higher than that of gasoline engines, especially in low-temperature areas where additional expenses such as antifreeze and preheating system maintenance are required.

Overall, if vehicles are used frequently for a long time, the fuel economy advantages of diesel engines will gradually become prominent, and the overall cost will be lower; If the car purchase budget is limited or the annual mileage is low, the initial low cost of gasoline engines is more attractive. When making a choice, one should consider their own frequency of use and budget flexibly.
