The A14NET, also known as the LUJ, is a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine developed by General Motors (GM) through its European subsidiary, Opel. Initially engineered for the European market, this powerplant first appeared in the Opel Astra in 2010. It was later introduced to other global markets, powering a wide range of vehicles including the Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax, Opel Mokka, and the Holden Cruze and Barina. This essay provides an overview of the A14NET engine's key attributes and technical features.

At its core, the A14NET is a 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,364 cc. It has a bore and stroke of 72.5 mm and 82.6 mm, respectively. The engine features a DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) cylinder head with four valves per cylinder. In its standard factory tuning, it produces a maximum power output of 103 kW (140 PS) and a peak torque of 200 Nm. The engine's broad torque curve delivers strong pulling power from low engine speeds, with peak torque available from 1,850 rpm all the way to 4,900 rpm.

One of the defining characteristics of the A14NET is its use of multipoint fuel injection rather than the more modern direct injection technology. This design choice allows for a lower compression ratio of 9.5:1. As a result, the engine is less sensitive to fuel quality and can reliably run on lower-octane gasoline, a notable advantage for markets with varied fuel standards. The engine is also distinguished by its lightweight construction. Through various measures, it is reportedly 20 kg lighter than some comparable rival engines, which contributes to improved fuel economy and vehicle dynamics.

In summary, the A14NET is a robust and versatile 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that successfully balances performance, efficiency, and reliability. Its application across numerous GM models from Opel and Vauxhall to Chevrolet, Buick, and Holden underscores its importance as a global powertrain solution. The engine's combination of a wide torque band, durable construction, and adaptability to different fuel grades made it a key component of GM's small-displacement turbocharged strategy in the early 2010s.
